Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Seawolves Spoil Cavell's Big Night

Falcons fall at Anchorage for just the second time in the last 10 visits

ANCHORAGE, Ak. -- Tobin Karlberg scored all of his 20 points during the second half Thursday, including the go-ahead basket with 61 seconds remaining in Alaska Anchorage's 88-83 victory over Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The loss spoiled the game-high 24-point performance of Harry Cavell that was a season-best total for the fifth-year senior guard.

With 17 first-half points, Cavell moved into the Top-10 among all-time SPU career scoring leaders. He not only moved ahead of previous No. 10 Chris Banchero, who tallied 1,327 points from 2008-11, but rose all the way to the No. 8 position.

Cavell now has 1,338 career points, surging ahead of both Dave Wortman, who scored 1,328 points from 1958-62, and Cory Hutsen, whose 1,334 points came between 2012-15.

SHAW ANDERSON DUNK

SECOND-HALF SURGES
SPU trailed by as many as eight points in the second half, at 69-61, after Hunter Sweet completed a three-point play with 6:48 remaining.

The Falcons nailed nine straight shots to forge a 20-9 run that resulted in an 81-78 lead. Divant'e Moffitt capped the surge on a driving layup with 2:03 displayed on the clock.

Anchorage outscored the Falcons 10-2 over the final 1:39 to claim the victory. Karlberg's driving layup with 1:01 left to play put the Seawolves in front for good.

The Falcons (8-6) fell to 1-2 in GNAC play and saw an end to their four-game winning streak in games at UAA. They had emerged victorious in eight of their last nine visits to Anchorage.

The Seawolves (7-3) improved their league ledge to 2-1.

SCORING SUMMARY
Cavell made 7 of 14 shots from the field and sank 9 of 11 free throws. His previous season-high was a 23-point effort versus Northwest University on Dec. 8.

Moffitt finished with 15 points and Shaw Anderson had 14. Each of them distributed five assists.

The Falcons lost despite registering 53-percent accuracy from the floor (30 of 57), a figure that included 7-for-20 shooting on 3-pointers. They made 16 of 20 free throws.

Anchorage countered with 46-percent shooting (27 of 59), but doubled their opponent's 3-point output. The Seawolves nailed 14 of 36 treys and 20 of 23 free throws.

Four Seawolves posted double-digit points, including 19 from David Rowlands who scored all but three of those before halftime. Oggie Pantovic had 15 points and collected 14 caroms to spearhead UAA's 35-26 command on the boards. Sweet notched 11 points.

FIRST HALF SUMMARY
The opening 20 minutes featured a scoring battle between the Falcons' Cavell and Rowlands of Anchorage. Cavell amassed 17 points in the period fueled by 9-for-11 accuracy from the free throw line to go along with four field goals.

Rowlands countered with perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the line and made 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range. That sparked the Seawolves for a 9-for-22 performance beyond the arc, accumulating 27 of their 39 points from long distance.

Anchorage gained 21 more points on treys than the Falcons, who made 2 of 6 in the first half.

The Seawolves tallied the game's first four points and kept the visitors off the scoreboard for over three minutes before Anderson found the basket on a tip-in. Their lead was 15-9 before SPU staged a rally.

Cavell compiled nine points to fuel a 14-3 Falcons spree. When he made the first of two free throws with 7:47 showing on the clock, SPU owned a 23-18 advantage.

The teams traded baskets for the next five minutes before Anchorage closed the half with 10 unanswered points. Rowland netted five points during that surge, including a 3-pointer with 1:05 left to set the halftime score at 39-33 in favor of the Seawolves.

Pantovic hauled in 11 rebounds to that juncture, accounting for half of his team's total. The Seawolves outrebounded SPU 22-13 in the first half.
