ELLENSBURG, Wash. – This is about as close as it gets.
Just. Three. Points.
Renick Meyer
That narrow margin is all that separates Seattle Pacific senior
Renick Meyer and Alaska Anchorage's Elena Cano after Day 1 of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's heptathlon.
Cano is in the lead with 2.841 points through four of the seven events at the Central Washington Recreational Sports Complex. Meyer has 2,838.
Falcons senior
Kellie May is seventh with 2,402.
The final three events are set for Tuesday beginning with the long jump at 11:00 a.m. That will be followed by the javelin, and then the meet-ending 800-meter run.
Meyer started off with a season-best time – and a victory – in the 100-meter hurdles, hitting the finish line in 14.25 seconds to pick up 943 points. Cano, also a senior, was second with a 14.44, earning 917 points.
Cano then tied for first in the high jump at 5-4¼ for 771 points, while Meyer and May were knotted for seventh, both getting over at 4-7 for 566 points apiece.
Kellie May
May and Meyer forged a 1-2 finish in the shot put. May threw it 34 feet, 8 ¼ inches, picking up 567 points, and Meyer had a toss of 32-5 ¾ for 523. This marked the second time in two-plus weeks that May has won a heptathlon shot put at this venue. She also took that event in the CWU Wildcat Invitational on March 16 at 34-2¼.
Meyer ended the first day with the second-fastest time in the 200-meter dash, clocking 25.90 seconds and adding 804 points. The only one ahead of her was Central Washington's McCall DeChenne at 25.75.
Cano placed 10
th in the shot and fourth in the 200.
Well within reach of both Meyer and Cano is Western Oregon freshman Jenelle Hurley. She is in third place overall with 2,784 points. That total includes 771 that the scored by tying Cano for first in the high jump at 5-4¼.
At the Wildcat Invite hep in April, Hurley and Meyer were close from start to finish. Hurley led after the first day, 2,780 to 2,718. Meyer wound up winning it, 4,629 to 4,596. Cano did not compete in that one.
Meyer's total from that meet put her onto the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying list. She currently sits in the No. 22 spot. The top 13 will be accepted into the national meet, with the possibility of between one and four additional competitors if space is available. Coming into this week, the No. 13 score is 4,902. The No. 17 score is 4,797.
