Four Falcons Get CRCA Academic Awards

SPU rowing quartet excelled on the water and in the classroom

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four Seattle Pacific student-athletes, including a pair of recently graduated seniors, were honored for their academic excellence when the 2022 Scholar-Athlete award winners were announced Friday by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA).

The two departing seniors are LeeAnn Arrington and Danielle Johnson. They were joined as recipients of the national scholastic award by junior teammates Macie Leach and Kalais Samuelson.
 
They are all members of the Falcons' eight-oared varsity crew that placed sixth at the 2022 NCAA Division II Championships.

Arrington served as the coxswain for SPU's top boat. She is from Empire High School in Oklahoma and graduated from SPU in June with a 3.81 grade point average in English.

A product of Jackson High School in Mill Creek, Washington, Johnson rowed in the No. 2 seat. She completed her collegiate career with a 3.82 GPA in mechanical engineering.

Pulling an oar in the No. 7 seat for SPU's varsity eight was Leach, who prepped at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, California. She compiled a 3.79 GPA in SPU's renowned nursing program.
 
Samuelson is a graduate of Sunset High School in Beaverton, Oregon and occupied the No. 3 seat in the SPU shell. She has a 3.82 GPA in a psychology curriculum.

Those four student-athletes helped Seattle Pacific earn a berth into the NCAA championship regatta for the first time since 2019.
 
The Falcons placed sixth in the team standings at this year's NCAA regatta, May 27-28 in Sarasota, Florida. Their varsity four crew advanced into the grand final for a fourth-place finish.
 
All rowers who earned this distinction are, at a minimum, in their second year of eligibility and have compiled at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average. In addition, student-athletes selected as CRCA Scholar-Athletes must have rowed in their institution's NCAA-eligible boats for a minimum of 75 percent of the spring races.
