BURNABY, B.C. – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team traveled to Burnaby, B.C. to play Simon Fraser on Thursday evening, as Chloe Gellhaus scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 20th minute while Mercedes Cullen and the defense shut out the Red Leafs 1-0.
"Good performance on the road tonight," head coach Arby Busey said. "Tough game against a quality opponent. Our women did a great job of finding solutions within the game, and getting a result. We defended well and got a shutout."
Emmy Moore played a perfect pass out wide to Kathryn Nyone. She worked the ball down the left side of the field before crossing it to the middle. Her pass was deflected by a Red Leaf but still made it inside the six-yard box. Gellhaus let the ball travel to her inside leg, using her right foot to flip the ball over the keeper for a nifty goal.
Cullen was excellent in goal for the Falcons. The first-year keeper played 90 minutes, making four saves for SPU. It's Cullen's fifth clean sheet of her career.
Maya Parman and Callie Rheaume provided lifts off the bench for the Falcons. Parman sent two shots in, while Rheaume had one shot. Sophie Beadle was the only other Falcon credited with a shot during the match.
Both teams were even in shots throughout the match. The Red Leafs gained a small 8-7 shot advantage over the Falcons, but the teams matched each other with four shots on goal. SPU gained a big advantage in corner kicks, earning seven to SFU's two. Five of those seven corner kicks came in the second half.
The Falcons are in Bellingham on Saturday night for a match against Western Washington. Kickoff happens at 4 p.m.
