Chaminade's Surges Singe SPU

Late scoring runs in all three sets help Silverswords down Falcons in preseason finale

LOS ANGELES – In all three sets of Saturday's volleyball match against Chaminade, the Seattle Pacific Falcons had their chances – and had the lead.

But in all three, the Silverswords saved their biggest scoring bursts for last.

Chaminade went on a 7-1 run late in the first set, 8-1 in the second, and then 3-0 at the end of the third to polish off a sweep of SPU on the final day of the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational.

Scores were 25-22, 25-17, 27-25.

The Falcons, who went toe-to-toe with No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday then pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Biola on Friday, went 1-3 in the tournament and were 2-6 in preseason play as they head into the start of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule next week.

Seattle Pacific had a 17-14 lead in the first set before Chaminade (4-6) put seven of the next eight points on the board inside CSULA's University Gym to go in front 21-18. The Falcons twice got within two at 21-19 and 24-22 before the Silverswords finished it on a kill by Brooklen Pe'a.

SPU was just one point down at 17-16 in Set 2. But Chaminade put that one way with eight of the final nine points.

The Falcons started off the third set with the first five points and were ahead most of the way. They had a set point at 24-23, but a kill by CU's Ajack Malual tied it at 24. SPU got another set point opportunity at 25-24 on a Silverswords service error. Chaminade then got the final three points on an SP ball handling error, a kill by Pe'a, and a Falcons attack error.

Junior opposite Maddie Pruden led Seattle Pacific with eight kills. Sophomore setter Emily Tulino posted her second double-double of the weekend, this one with 12 assists and 10 digs.

The Falcons hit .163 for the day (34 kills-19 errors-92 attacks). Junior middle blocker Allison Wilks tied her career high at .714 (6-1-7). The Silverswords finished at .210 (39-17-105).
