BURNABY, B.C. – A veteran influence was vital for the Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team in Thursday night's match against Simon Fraser, as Lars Helleren recorded a shutout while Alden Massey scored the game-winning goal that earned a massive 1-0 win for the Falcons over the Red Leafs.
"That was a big-time win against a good SFU team," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "It was great to see us close out a game like that, on the road, in a tough environment, against a well-coached team. I'm proud of this group and all that they invested tonight."
The defense stood firm throughout the entirety of the match. Ed Weise, Evan Aune, and Aidan Thrall helped hold the Red Leafs to six shots on goal throughout the match. Helleren came through on those shots, making six saves during 90 minutes between the posts. Helleren earned his fourth shutout of the season.
SPU had 12 shots, but just three came on goal throughout the match. Massey's goal came just after halftime in the 46th minute. Massey worked from the left side to the middle of the box, making two defenders miss along the way. He rocketed a shot that skimmed the turf and into the goal from a tough angle. Massey's first goal of the season couldn't have been better.
Next up is a match at Western Washington on Saturday at 7 p.m.
