SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team hosted Simon Fraser in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday evening. After giving up two goals in the first half, the Falcons gained momentum in the final 45 minutes but couldn't get past the Red Leafs and fell 3-1.
"There were opportunities available to us throughout that second half," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "Overall, I was pleased with how we played. We solved pressure through our build-out and got into good spaces. The margins in this league are so small, and they punished us for them early on. We didn't punish them when we had the chance."
The Falcons allowed two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. Devin O'Hea scored on a penalty kick in the 10th minute. In the 18th minute, it was Hamish Ogden scoring for the Red Leafs. Halftime came and went with SFU leading SPU 2-0.
In the 72nd minute, Connor Tollan nearly cut the Red Leaf lead in half. He ripped a shot that missed just high. It was one of three shots Tollan attempted on the night.
Jackson Goode found a creative way to score in the 74th minute. He crossed a ball toward the goal that Orlando Erazo let through. It was a good choice, as the Simon Fraser keeper stood and watched the ball trickle into the net. Goode's goal was his first of 2023 and cut the Red Leafs lead to 2-1. The visitors added one more goal in the 82nd and took the match 3-1.
The Falcons had five shots in the match, three of which were on goal. Tollan, Goode, and Andrew Tran took shots for the Falcons. SPU's second-half surge showcased itself in corner chances. SPU had six for the match, with four in the second half.
The Falcons hit the road for a match against Montana State University Billings on Saturday at 5 p.m. PST in Billings, Mont.
"The guys are going to be motivated to get points on the road," Sakuda said. "The guys are disappointed in tonight's result, but we get to turn around quickly and play again soon. They'll be motivated and excited to take the opportunity."
