Strong Second Half Gives Falcons 3-1 Win over Yellowjackets

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team picked up three points in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 3-1 victory over Montana State University Billings on Saturday evening.

The Falcons met the Yellowjackets for the second time in seven days on Saturday. SPU picked up their second win to sweep the season series against MSUB. The team had to come from behind after trailing 1-0 at halftime. Three second-half goals and a shutout in the final 45 minutes sent the Falcons to victory.

"Proud of the boys and the way they responded today," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "It wasn't always the prettiest game, but the guys made plays when we needed it, and they did a great job of closing the game out. It's important that we are able to win games when the soccer isn't as sharp as we would like it. We showed a lot of character in the response after going down."

The Falcons leveled the match in the 51st minute. The team earned a penalty kick after the Yellowjackets committed a foul in the box Raymundo Mendez stepped forward to take and make the penalty kick. Mendez scored his sixth goal of the season on the attempt.

Cameron Yriondo supplied a game-winning goal in the 56th minute. Joseph Van Horn set the shot up with a perfect pass. Yriondo finished, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Van Horn had his first assist of the season on the play, while Yirondo scored for the first time this season. It was the fourth goal of Yriondo's career.

"Credit to MSUB," Sakuda said. "They made it very difficult today. We felt like we missed some moments in the first half to get in behind, and in the second half we were able to stretch them a bit with Ray's movement, and he gets rewarded with the penalty. I'm happy for Joey to come in and make a positive impact on the game with the assist on the second goal."

The Falcons added an insurance goal in the final minute. Orlando Erazo made the most of a chance to score. Like Mendez, Erazo scored his sixth goal of the season.

Cam Welty and the defense stood tall, especially in the second half. The Falcons faced four shots in the final 45 minutes. Welty kept them all out of the back of the net.

The Falcons have wait a week before they play their next match. They host Saint Martin's on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at Interbay Soccer Stadium.
