BURNABY, B.C. – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team needed to dig deep to earn three points on the road against Simon Fraser on Thursday night. The Falcons did just that, scoring two goals in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over the Red Leafs.
"We showed a ton of character tonight," head coach Arby Busey said. "We needed a big second half, and the team delivered. They believe in their abilities, and that belief carried us to another victory."
The Falcons spent most of the night on the offensive attack, outshooting the Red Leafs 16-8. SPU put seven shots on frame to four from the SFU. The Falcons forced the Red Leaf keeper to make six saves on the night. Still, the team needed shots to find the back of the net late in the second half.
SPU leveled the match in the 64th minute. Lauren Forster worked the ball down the left side of the field before sending it toward Sophie Beadle. Beadle ran down the middle and got a foot to Forster's pass. Beadle's shot ricocheted off Red Leaf defenders before sneaking into the goal. It was an own goal that leveled the score 1-1.
Taylor Krueger supplied Thursday's game-winning goal. Kayla Wallace sent a cross from the left side into the six-yard box. Krueger got her head to the ball and put it in the right side of the net.
Mercedes Cullen played keeper for the Falcons against the Red Leafs. Tonight's stat line includes 90 minutes between the post, with three saves and eight shots faced.
The Falcons turn around quickly and travel to Montana State University Billings for a match on Saturday at 2 p.m.
