LACEY, Wash. – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team had to overcome Saint Martin's and the weather on Saturday afternoon, and after a lengthy lightning delay, the Falcons struck twice in the 69th minute to defeat the Saints 2-0.
"As they have all year, our group was able to navigate and solve the challenges they faced today," head coach Arby Busey said. "They stuck together and worked really hard, showed a great mentality this afternoon. It's been a long four games on the road, and to get a win and a shutout today is a great reward for all the work they put in over the last two weeks! They are in a really good place right now, and excited for another week together!"
The Falcons broke open the scoring in the 69th minute. Moira MacKay won the ball from the Saints at midfield before sending it wide to Taylor Krueger. The Saints poked the ball away through the end line, setting up a corner kick for the Falcons.
Marissa Bankey stood over and sent the corner kick in for SPU. Unfortunately for the Saints, their keeper got a hand on the ball and knocked it in for an own goal. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, the Falcons added on to their lead. Kayla Wallace gained possession on the defensive half of the field. She took it herself, passing Saints defenders to create a scoring chance. She sent a shot in from just outside the 18-yard box that snuck in low and to the right.
Mercedes Cullen was in goal for the Falcons and picked up her fourth shutout of the season. Kathryn Nyone, Mackenzie Aiken, Kailalani Ahuna, and Bankey helped keep the Saints to two shots on goal. Cullen saved both in the 2-0 victory.
The Falcons return to Interbay Soccer Stadium on Thursday for a match against Central Washington University that kicks off at 7 p.m.
