Falcons Grind for Gritty Tie With Vikings

SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team welcomed Western Washington to Interbay Soccer Stadium on Saturday night as the Falcons came within inches of beating the Vikings but settled for a 1-1 tie thanks to a late goal from Connor Tollan.

The Vikings took the lead in the 32nd minute of the match. Adan Fernandez put a pass at the feet of Mitchell Hutter. Hutter blasted a shot from 19 yards out to the upper left corner that got past a diving Cam Welty. Hutter's goal put the Vikings up 1-0.

Like Thursday, the Falcons brought intensity to the second half. They had seven shots in the final 45 minutes compared to three from the first half. The team had several goal chances that missed by slim margins.

In the 56th minute, Raymundo Mendez had a shot that was nearly in the goal. Somehow, the Vikings were able to keep it out of the net. Then, Jackson Goode had a diving header in the 68th minute that missed just right of the post. Aidan Drought sent in a strong, left-footed shot that missed wide left.

The Falcons finally found the equalizer in the 79th minute. Orlando Erazo worked the ball down the left side of the field. He found enough space to cross the ball into the center of the box. Tollan was there to tap it into a wide-open net from eight yards out. The goal tied the match at its eventual final score of 1-1.

"We showed a ton of character in how responded in the second half," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "The second half was great. We had control and created chances. We thought we had one that went in, but the guys moved on quickly and got the tying goal. It's a credit to our team that they continued to believe."

The Falcons are on the road twice next weekend. They'll start with Saint Martin's on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m. in Lacey, Wash. Then on Saturday, Nov. 4, the Falcons travel to Western Oregon for an 11 a.m. match.
