BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team traveled north to take on Western Washington on Thursday night, as unlucky mistakes proved too much to overcome for the Falcons as they stumbled 2-0 to the Vikings.
SPU kept pace with WWU offensively. The Falcons had two shots on goal, one from Luis Zazueta, and another from Andrew Tran. They had one fewer quality shot than the Vikings. SPU created three corner kicks as well. One more would have matched the Vikings.
Donovahn Allen and Raymundo Mendez found ways to create offense for SPU. Allen had a pair of shots, while Mendez sent one it. Unfortunately, neither found the back of the net.
"It was a tough one tonight," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "Western made it difficult on us. Credit to them for forcing us, at times, to go away from our style and who we are. We need to get back to that on Saturday. We're back at Interbay and I know the guys are motivated to not only put in a good performance but matching that with a great result against Billings."
Trouble came quickly for the Falcons on Thursday night. The Vikings were on the attack when Andrew Rotter crossed the ball in front of the box. The Falcons did their best to knock it down, but the ball trickled into the goal instead. SPU trailed 1-0 in the 10th minute after an own goal.
SPU tried to level the match throughout the early parts of the second half. In the 69th minute, Evan Aune committed a foul in the box, sending the Vikings to a penalty kick. Ryan Rotter stepped forward to take, and make the chance. SPU was down 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining.
SPU looks to find its footing at home this Saturday. The Falcons return to Interbay Soccer Stadium to host MSU Billings at 4:30 p.m.
