SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team had the bounce-back performance they needed on Saturday evening when the Falcons scored three goals and shut out Montana State University Billings for their first conference victory this season.
"The team played well and put in a good performance," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "We're happy with the result. We were all disappointed in most aspects of the game on Thursday. The way the guys came back and played the way they did was great to see. We're proud of them."
Raymundo Mendez broke the seal on the scoring in the 28th minute. Cameron Yriondo moved the ball to Mendez who snuck a low shot in near the left post. The goal was the fifth of the season for Mendez. Mendez sits firmly inside the top 10 in the conference in scoring and has been a standout offensively for the Falcons since joining the team this season.
The Falcons added to their lead in the 50th minute. Judah Johnston was working against a Yellowjacket defender when he was brought down in the box. Orlando Erazo stepped forward to take the penalty kick. He'd knock it in the lower left corner, putting the Falcons up 2-0.
Erazo added one more goal to his totals in the 53rd minute. Silvestre Vallejo started the play by getting the ball to Erazo. The MSUB keeper came charging toward the ball. Erazo responded by flipping it over the keeper's head and scoring. The goal put the Falcons up 3-0.
Cam Welty got the start in goal for the Falcons. Evan Aune, Donovahn Allen, Jackson Goode, and Vallejo did well limiting the attack from the Yellowjackets. Welt faced just six shots and had to make a pair of saves. The shutout was the first of Welty's career.
"Cam and the back line played well today," Sakuda added. "Any time we get clean sheets, we're happy. The whole team played well and did a great job of possessing and creating how and what we wanted. It was a solid effort from everyone."
The Falcons are back at Interbay Soccer Stadium on Thursday, as they host Simon Fraser. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
