LACEY, Wash. – The Seattle Pacific University men's basketball team hit the road to take on Saint Martin's, as the Falcons couldn't slow the momentum of the Saints as their torrid pace led them to a 94-76 victory on Thursday night.
"They're a good team," head coach Grant Leep said. "They've earned their position in our conference that has proven to be very good from top to bottom. They do a great job of playing with pace and creating possessions. It didn't go our way tonight."
The first half between the Falcons and Saints was fast and free-flowing. The first media timeout didn't happen until 12:53, as SPU trailed 14-13. From there, the Falcons went on a tear, putting together a 12-0 run that lasted 4:34. The team went 5-for-6 from the field during that span, including four points from Zack Paulsen and a tough 3-point play from Shaw Anderson. SPU led 24-14 with 9:56 left in the first half.
The Saints erased that lead with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes. Trace Evans stopped the run with a layup. Syon Blackmon followed with a jumper to put the Falcons up 28-24 with 6:20 left in the first half.
The Falcons led 32-31 with 3:21 to play in the first frame. The Saints erupted for a 14-3 to close out the half. It was capped by a long 3-pointer from Christian Haffner as time expired. The run lifted the Saints to a 43-35 lead at halftime.
Momentum carried into the second half for the Saints. They extended their lead to 65-45 with 11:44 left in the game. The Falcons couldn't cut into the Saints' lead.
Anderson led the Falcons with 19 on 7-for-10 shooting from the field. He added three rebounds and three assists to his night. Ben Baker-McCann provided a huge lift off the bench for the Falcons. He dropped 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting in 12 minutes on the floor. He tied Evans with a team-high five rebounds.
SPU shot 50 percent (28-for-56) for the game. They struggled from deep, knocking down just six 3-pointers for the game. The Saints couldn't miss on their home floor, going 40-for-70 (57.1 percent) for the game, while adding 20 team assists.
The Falcons travel to Monmouth, Ore. for a game against Western Oregon on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
