BELLINGHAM, Wash. –
Isaiah Archer still doesn't quite have the fastest 400-meter dash time in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
But on Saturday afternoon, he beat the guy who does.
Going head-to-head against Alaska Anchorage's Kevin Angarita, Archer got the to the finish line first in 48.48 seconds at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational track and field meet.
The Seattle Pacific sophomore's time on the oval inside Civic Stadium was 66 hundredths ahead of Angarita's 49.14.
Angarita has the GNAC's top time of 47.91, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark posted on March 23 in San Diego at the Aztec Invitational. Archer's fastest is 48.24 on April 8 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, fast enough for the SPU school record and currently is No. 3 in the conference. Finishing third on Saturday was Lucas Brenek of Western Washington in 49.27. He's No. 6 in the GNAC with his 48.91 last Saturday at Ellensburg.
"I've seen a lot of names, a lot of those people who could be in he final at conference," Archer said, looking ahead to the GNAC Championships that are set for May 12-13 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. "I definitely wanted to give it my best shot today and see how I stack up, and I ended up winning.
"I didn't feel the best before the race, but I still wanted to go out hard and try to finish stronger," Archer added.
Archer's victory was his fourth in a row, preceded by W's at the Point Loma Collegiate Invitational on March 25, Pomona-Pitzer, and then last week's Wildcat Open in Ellensburg.
Including his 48.24, Archer has been in the 48s for five straight meets. He's pushing for a lower number and knows what it'll take to get there.
"My start – that's the biggest thing that's going to get me to 47, get out that first 100.," he said.
Running in Lane 4, Archer moved up through the pack along the backstretch and edged ahead going into the far turn. He was in front down the homestretch and hung on for first..
Lizzy Daugherty
BIG DAY FOR DAUGHERTY
Falcons pole vaulter Lizzy Daugherty tied her personal-best height with a clearance of 12 feet, 4 inches in the women's pole vault, giving her second place.
A junior, Daugherty previously went 12-4 last May 7 at the Linfield Open.
Her best mark this season was 12-3 ¼ at Point Loma on March 25. That put her onto the NCAA provisional qualifying list. She came into this weekend tied for 41

Saturday's performance matched what fellow junior Emily Thomason did last week in Ellensburg. At 12-4, they are part of a tie for 34
th on the D2 provisional list.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL

Brennan LeBlanc

Brennan LeBlanc for
Brennan LeBlanc to break 10 minutes in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. LeBlanc came across the finish line in 9:55.12. In his first year as a steepler, he started with a 10:15.46 at the season-opening Ed Boitano Invitational on March 4, then went 10:04.68 at the Mangrum Invitational in San Marcos on March 24, and 10:12.88 in the Emilie Mondor Invitational at Simon Fraser on April 8.
-- Other top-3 finishers for Seattle Pacific were
Isaac Venable (second in the men's 10,000) Maya Ewing (third in the women's 3K steeplechase), and
Brad Bowman (tie for third in the men's pole vault).
-- This
meet had team scoring, and the
Falcons finished sixth on both sides, with 55.5 points for the men and 40 for the women. Host Western Washington won both, with 214 on the men's side and 131 on the women's.
UP NEXT

Portland Twilight at Griswold Stadium on the campus of Lewis & Clark College. The first race is at 3:30 p.m. The pole vaulters will go about 40 miles further southwest to McMinnville for the
