SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team's offensive attack was relentless on Thursday night against Western Oregon, as the Falcons gained a 23-4 advantage in shots, but SPU settled for a 0-0 tie with the Wolves.
The Falcons were aggressive early and often against the Wolves on Thursday night. It started in the first half when they sent in 14 shots. Logann Dukes had a chance in the 31st minute, followed by another screamer from Jen Merri that were both saved. Moira MacKay had two more shots on goal before the end of the half that was scooped up.
While The Falcons launched shots at the Wolves, they held their opponents to no-shot attempts in the first half.
"The first half, there were things that were special from us in terms of the passing and building play into those higher areas," head coach Arby Busey said. "To be fair, continued into the second half, had a lot of excellent stuff getting to the doors that it, unfortunately, tonight, the game was decided in that penalty box."
The offensive onslaught continued in the second half. SPU totaled nine shots in the final 45 minutes. Maya Parman and Nora Patterson had great looks kept out of the net. Kayla Wallace had a go that was saved in the 82nd minute. WOU's Sophia Pierce was a wall for the Wolves, finishing the night with 12 saves.
"We weren't clean enough or good enough to get it past their goalkeeper tonight," Busey added. "She played well and made a lot of saves. They defended with a ton of bravado and made it challenging for us. We certainly created a ton of good chances and played well tonight. It's tough to walk away without a little more result-wise, but played some really good soccer."
Mercedes Cullen picked up her third shutout of 2024. She wasn't very busy, facing just four shots while making a save for the Falcons.
The Falcons look ahead to Saturday's senior day celebration, where the team will honor Lauren Snedeker, Kathryn Nyone, and Landrey McCann before their match against Saint Martin's at 4:30 p.m.
"I think we look to carry over the soccer up until the 18-yard box that we're attacking," Busey said. "We'll look to put that finishing touch on it. We'll celebrate and honor three women who have been amazing in giving everything that they have to their teammates, coaches, and this program. They show up every single day and just give, give, give, give, give. It's a nice moment for all of us to push back to them that they've given all of us, and celebrate them in hopefully getting them what they want on Saturday."
