Fours Fly at Falcon Regatta

SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University women's rowing team hosted heavy hitters on Saturday's Falcon Regatta, where the top three teams in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association met in Seattle for early-season races where the Falcons found success.

The CRCA announced its first weekly national poll last Wednesday. The Falcons found themselves in third place. Defending national champions Cal Poly Humboldt topped the charts with 197 points. The University of Central Oklahoma landed in second with 142 points, just two more than the Falcons. The Falcon Regatta featured all three of the teams.

"We are really pleased with today's racing across the board," head coach Caitlin McClain said. "The two fours and the JV8+ beating the DII competition is huge and shows the depth of the team. The V8+ also had strong races and were able to sharpen up a few things between flights, which resulted in a faster time and closing the gap on Humboldt."

The weather was cold and rainy. That didn't stop SPU supporters from cheering on the Falcons. Fans lined the banks of the L.W. Ship Canal, creating a tremendous atmosphere for the rowers to compete in.

SPU enjoyed the most success in both of the four shells. They opened the day with an Open 4+ win over the Lumberjacks with an 8:29.9. The Falcons took the second flight as well with an even faster 8:19.4.

The Varsity 4+ belonged to the Falcons as well. SPU won the first flight with a 7:56.2. It was the only time under eight minutes by any 4+ shell.

"Coming off of the PLU Invite, finals, and the spring break grind, the team did an impressive job managing their energy and emotions and executing composed races that balanced relaxation with aggression," McClain added. "It was great to have Cal Poly and Central Oklahoma in Seattle (along with UW freshman in the JV8+ race). We are so grateful for the support of the department, alumni, and our families and friends in marking another successful Falcon Regatta."

The Falcons return to competition on Saturday, April 6 at the Pioneer/Pilot Invitational in Vancouver, Wash.
