Making the Grade in Class and on Court

Evans, Mayer and Beirne combine basketball talent with academic achievement

GREENWOOD, Ind. – One brought his all-around game night in, night out. Another shined in her first year with the program, posting 10 double-doubles. Yet another was as solid of a floor general as could be found anywhere.

And all three of them were every bit as productive in the classroom as they were on the basketball court.

For all of that, Seattle Pacific's Trace Evans, Olivia Mayer and Hunter Beirne have been named to their respective College Sports Communicators Academic All-District teams.

24MBB_Evans_TraceA sophomore, Evans has a 3.70 grade-point average as an accounting major. He started all 32 games this season – one of just two Falcons to do so. The 6-foot-9 native of New South Wales, Australia, averaged 9.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and shot a team-leading .574 from the field. That percentage ranked No. 2 in the GNAC.

On Nov. 11 at Chico State, Evans recorded his second college double-double, this one with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Just 10 days later, he poured in a career-high 18 points against Sonoma State. He also had an eye for open teammates, logging at least one assist in 28 of the 32 games, and dishing a career-high five at Azusa Pacific on Nov. 17.

"Trace is a model student athlete," Falcons coach Keffrey Fazio said. "We are very proud of his efforts both on the basketball court and in the classroom. He is a very hard-working young man, and we are lucky he is a part of our program."

24WBB_Mayer_OliviaMayer is a biology major with a 3.56 GPA. She joined the Falcons this past season after spending her first two college campaigns at Whitworth University in Spokane, The 6-foot forward, a junior, averaged a team-leading 15.7 points and 8.1 rebounds and shot .452 from the field.

It didn't take her long to show what she was going to bring to the team. After posting 10 points and seven rebounds in the season opener against Cal State Los Angeles, Mayer came through with 18 points and 12 boards the next night as SPU took down preseason No, 11-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, 58-53. She finished the season with 454 points, the first Falcon with 400-plus in a season since 2017-18, That total included her 1,000th career point.

"One thing I love about her is her work ethic in the classroom. She's constantly communicating with us coaches what her life in the classroom is like," head coach Mike Simonson said. "It might be a lab or an assignment. She's always super-excited about what's going on in class. She works her tail off. For her to be on this All-District team is just a testament to all the work she has put in. She's a heck of a basketball player but she's an even better student."

24WBB_Beirne_HunterBeirne is a redshirt junior now working on her master's degree in teaching and has 4.0 grad school GPA. She played 26 of Seattle Pacific's 29 games, with 25 starts at the point guard spot. She averaged a single-season career-best 9.5 points and led the team with 95 assists. Beirne also averaged 4.0 rebounds.

What didn't show up in the box score was her leadership on the floor. Beirne was usually the one bringing the ball upcourt, getting a read on what was happening and responding accordingly. While not typically a big scorer, she knew how to find the basket. Beirne was in double-digit scoring eight times, including a career-high 28 in the regular-season finale at Alaska Fairbanks, which the Falcon needed to win for a spot in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament. They did, 72-64.

"She has always been a great person in the classroom – high GPA, graduated early, now she's in grad school. But what ai love about this All-District team is not only do you have to be great in the classroom, you also have to be a great player," head coach Mike Simonson said. "She has put in the time and the work to improve. For her to get on this All-District team just shows she's elite in both areas of the academic world and the basketball world."

To be considered for the Academic All-District team, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.50 grade-point average, be a sophomore or higher, and must play in at least 90 percent of the team's games or start at least 66 percent of the games.
