LAKEWOOD, Wash. – The Seattle Pacific University women's rowing team opened its season at the PLU Invitational on Saturday, where the Falcons battled both windy conditions and tough competition to set their early-season times.
"Despite the weather, we are very grateful to have had this first race of the season and ever for our walk-ons," head coach
Caitlin McClain said. "The conditions were challenging with 15 mile per hour winds, and we struggled to get into our rhythms. We probably could have been more mentally prepared and handled it better, but that's why we race - to learn and adapt. It would have been great to get out there again today, but we've got a solid training block and a couple more tune ups ahead to find our groove."
The Falcons competed against Great Northwest Athletic Conference Foe Western Washington. SPU also took on the University of Puget Sound, Lewis & Clark, and host Pacific Lutheran University.
SPU faced off against the Vikings and the Loggers in the V8+. The Falcons posted a time of 7:13.39 and took third in the heat. The Falcons succeeded in the second V8+, beating the Loggers with a time of 8:05.0.
The V4+ came down to the Vikings and the Falcons. SPU posted an 8:42.91, but it wasn't enough to take the race. The novice 4+ finished the day on a shortened 700-meter course, and we're unable to get accurate times.
Originally the event was supposed to feature two flights of races. Unfortunately, the weather canceled those plans.
The Falcons look forward to their lone home race on March 23, when they host Cal Poly Humboldt and the University of Central Oklahoma on the L.W. Ship Canal.
