ARCATA, Calif. – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team continued its early-season offensive boom with a 4-0 shutout of Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday that featured a hat trick from Kayla Wallace and another goal from Moira MacKay.
Thursday, the Falcons opened their season with a 5-2 victory over Sonoma State. It was the first time since Aug. 27, 2005, that the team had scored five goals in a season-opener. On Saturday, SPU added four more goals to its 2024 total.
"It's a dreamland right now," head coach Arby Busey said. "We've been aggressive attacking-wise and it is paying off huge for us. I can't imagine we can stay at this pace, but we are enjoying playing together right now. We have created a lot of good chances, and our players have been amazing at being in the right places at the right times."
The Falcons jumped all over the Lumberjacks on Saturday. Moira MacKay instantly got it started for SPU, scoring in the first minute. It's MacKay's second goal in as many days, and pushed her career total to six with the Falcons.
From there, Kayla Wallace took over. Taylor Krueger worked against her defender before crossing the ball into the box. It landed at the foot of Wallace, who struck it into the back of the net giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead. They'd take that lead into halftime.
Wallace picked up where she left off in the second half. She found a way to score unassisted to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
Wallace's final goal came midway through the second half. Maya Parman stood over a free kick before launching it into the box. Wallace got to it and finished to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead they would carry into halftime.
"Another efficient day in front of goal," Busey added. "We took advantage of our opportunities again today."
Mercedes Cullen and Landry Schoennauer teamed up to shut out the Lumberjacks. Cullen played 69 minutes before Schoennauer took over to finish the match. The Lumberjacks took seven shots during the match, but neither Cullen nor Schoennauer would need to make a save to keep them scoreless.
SPU returns to Seattle for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 12, when they host Hawaii Hilo at 4:30 p.m.
*Cal Poly Humboldt will send a corrected box score at their earliest convenience.
