SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific Athletics Department congratulates hurdler
Hannah Chang, distance runners
Annika Esvelt, hurdler
Andrew Bell, and sprinter
Justin Brooks as this week's SPU Athletics Falcons of the Week.
HANNAH CHANG / WOMEN'S TRACK
WHAT SHE DID: Chang won her second straight GNAC 100-meter hurdles championship, clocking 13.85 seconds last Saturday. In Friday's preliminary heats, Chang broke the meet record with a time of 13.76, bettering the mark of 13.81 that had been set just five minutes earlier by Alaska Anchorage's Liv Heite. Along with her back-to-back outdoor titles, Chang is the reigning GNAC champion in the indoor 60 hurdles.
ANNIKA ESVELT / WOMEN'S TRACK
WHAT SHE DID – Esvelt won her second consecutive GNCC crown in the 5000 meters, and she did it in a meet-record time of 16 minutes, 32.51 seconds. That bettered the old mark of 16:35.10 set in 2019 by Caroline Kurgat, the former Alaska Anchorage star who went on to establish the overall NCAA record of 14:40.45. Before her 5K, Esvelt ran to third place in the 1500 meters, recording a personal-best time of 4:33.24
ANDREW BELL / MEN'S TRACK
WHAT HE DID: Bell officially set the school record in the 110 hurdles, posting a 14.48 to take third in the GNAC finals. Bell already had beaten the converted school record of 14.74, and the fully automatic timing record of 14.82, both on multiple occasions. At the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational on April 26, he ran 14.45, but the wind (+2.1) was barely over the allowable legal limit of 2.0 that day. That was not an issue on Saturday. This past winter, Bell broke the school indoor 60 hurdles record six times and won the GNAC title.
JUSTIN BROOKS / MEN'S TRACK
WHAT HE DID: Brooks broke is own school record in the 400-meter dash, coming across the line in 47.84 seconds for fourth place in Saturday's GNAC finals. Brooks previously set the record with a 47.86 on April 12 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. He finishes his freshman season as owner of both the indoor and outdoor 400 dash records. He set the indoor record last Dec. 14 in his very first college race, going 48.58.
