SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University women's rowing team competed close to home in the 39th annual Windermere Cup on Saturday morning as the Falcons rowed to a pair of third place finishes on the Montlake Cut.
The Windermere Cup started 38 years ago, in 1987, when Windermere Real Estate founder, John Jacobi collaborated with the University of Washington to create the annual rowing event. It has grown into a fantastic celebration for the rowing community.
"The team had fun and fast racing," head coach
Caitlin McClain said. "Both boats represented the team well and did a great job harnessing the environment's energy while focusing on executing their best races. We are grateful to UW for hosting this celebration of rowing and inviting us to race."
Two Varsity 8+ boats represented SPU on Saturday morning. The V4+ lined up against Washington and Western Washington. The Falcons opened the race in third place and battled the Vikings in second place. The Falcons couldn't close on the Vikings and took third at 7:23.31.
The V8+ boat hit the water next, taking on two teams from Washington and SeattleU. The Falcons started well, and we're less than three seconds from the lead at the 500-meter mark. As the race went on, both Huskie boats pulled away from the Falcons. SPU took home third place with a time of 7:02.73.
"It was great to see the 3V8+ which featured our seniors along with the next fastest ergs go 7:02.7," McClain said. "The boat ended up being members of both the V8+ and V4+ so it is great to see them come together with one day of practice and go that fast. The 4V8+ was also a new combination and posted a solid time of 7:23.3 just 5 seconds from Western's 8+."
The regular season ended for the Falcons with the conclusion of the Windermere Cup. SPU now prepares for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on May 17 in Gold River, Calif.
