SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team played its home opener against Colorado Mesa on Saturday morning, as a goal in each half from the Mavericks got them past the Falcons, 2-0.

"Tough one today," head coach
Arby Busey said. "Mesa got off to a great start and put us under a lot of pressure. They suffocated us early, and we had a difficult time finding solutions. Had some decent chances as the first half went on, but their GK was well positioned, and we couldn't find a way past her. We'll process this one this weekend, then look forward to beginning conference play next week."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mavericks scored first when Mari Ige sent a ball into the box that was crossed in front of the goal by Ella Speerschneider before Ellie Duncan netted it to put her team up 1-0 in the 24th minute.
- The Mavericks added to their lead in the 55th minute when Duncan set up Parker Mairs for a goal.
- Nora Patterson had a great look to cut into the Mavericks' lead in the 60th minute, but it hit the crossbar and stayed out of the goal.
- Grace Coston had one last try for the Falcons in the 88th minute, but the CMU keeper saved her shot.
- The Falcons fell to the Mavericks 2-0.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- The Falcons finished the game with eight shots, seven of which were on goal.
- Patterson and Jes Lizotte led the Falcons with two shots on goal each.
- Landry Schoennauer played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Falcons, facing 14 shots and allowing two goals.
UP NEXT
The Falcons start Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next weekend with a game on the road and at home. SPU travels to Saint Martin's on Thursday, Sept. 17, for a match at 3:00 p.m. in Lacey, Wash., followed by a match against Western Oregon at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Interbay Soccer Stadium.
