Johnny Lai, formerly a coach at the junior college, club and high school levels, has been a member of the SPU coaching staff since 2006.

Lai served as an assistant coach at Bellevue Community College from 2003-2005. Bellevue won two NWAACC North Division titles and finished in the top 5 in the NWAACC championships in his three seasons. Lai coached juniors club volleyball in the USAV Puget Sound Region from 2001 to 2009 with Club Wahine and Washington Volleyball Academy, qualifying three teams for the Junior National Championships. He also coached at Seattle's Roosevelt High School from 1997 to 2000.

Lai currently works as a research scientist in biopharmaceuticals in Seattle. He earned his master's degree at the University of Washington after obtaining his bachelor's degree at UC Davis.
