MONMOUTH, Ore. – One close call was enough for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.
Gabby Oddo recorded her eighth straight double-double, and SPU, after a back-and-forth tussle with Western Oregon in the first game, had things go its way the rest afternoon to sweep the Wolves in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in WOU's New P.E. Building were 26-24, 25-15, 25-18.
After a four-match losing streak, the Falcons (9-10, 7-5 GNAC) finished the first half of a two-week stretch away from home with wins in both of their Oregon matches this week, having downed Concordia-Portland in four games on Thursday night.
They also took both matches from Western Oregon (5-14, 2-10 GNAC) for the second straight year, having swept the Wolves in Seattle on Sept. 13.
Abbie Wright
"I'm especially proud of that third game, being up 2-0, and being able to finish strong and treat that third game as important as the first two," head coach
Abbie Wright said. "That's hard to do when you're playing hard to keep that sense of urgency, and we did a really good job of that today."
Oddo had 13 kills and 11 digs on Saturday, hitting a business-like .243 with just four errors on 37 attacks. She also factored into three blocks.
In fact, four of SPU's net players finished at .200 or better on Saturday. Along with Oddo, sophomore middle blocker
Gabi Stegemoller was at .385, sophomore outside hitter
Maddie Batiste was at .312, and redshirt senior opposite
Hailey Gaines was at .235.
Symone
Symone Tran
Tran, having tallied another 34 assists, moved into the No. 2 spot on SPU's all-time list in that category. She now has 3,801 for her career, moving past Deri Paulson. A member of SPU's inaugural team in 1986, Paulson earned 3,793 assists from 1986-89.
Seattle Pacific trailed by as many as four points in the opening game, the last time at 16-12. Down 18-16, the Falcons rang up four in a row to take a 20-18 lead.
Then it was Western Oregon's turn for a 4-0 run and a 22-20 lead. SPU forged back in front, 23-22, and had a game point at 24-23 that it was not able to convert. A Wolves attack error gave the Falcons another game point at 25-24, and senior setter
Symone Tran got this one with a dump at the net that WOU could not return.
Seattle Pacific built a 7-2 lead in Game 2. Western Oregon got as close as one at 9-8. It was 16-13 for the Falcons when they tallied five in a row to take command: a tip and a kill by Oddo, back-to-back blocks, with senior
Shaun Crespi having a hand in both, and s Stegemoller service ace, to make it 21-13.
"Getting some closure at the end of the first game and taking that into the second game, we kept playing consistently," Wright said.
SPU never trailed in the third game and was tied just once at 1-1. From there, it built a 12-4 lead, which never dipped below four.
"We passed really well today," Wright said. "Mallie (Donohoe) did a good job in back-row passing, and
Maddie Batiste came in and did a good job. You can tell our kids followed the scouting report well and placed the ball in spots that we were talking about."
BY THE NUMBERS
--The Falcons hit .208 for the day (43 kills-18 errors-120 attacks), the second time in the past three matches they have finished above .200. What's more, they got better as the afternoon progressed: .154 in Game 1, then .202 in Game 2, and .257 in Game 3.

Gabby Oddo now has 12 double-doubles for the season and 32 for her career.
-- With her 15.5 points on Saturday (13 kills-1 ace-3 block assists), Oddo will have a chance to tally her 1,000 career point next week. She now has 986.0.
