SEATTLE – From start to finish, it just wasn't Seattle Pacific's night.
Gabby Oddo and
Hailey Gaines had 10 kills apiece, but the Falcons never led in any of the three games and were swept by Central Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.
SPU (10-12, 8-7 GNAC) dropped its second straight. Central Washington (17-5, 11-4 GNAC) took both matches in the season series.
"They're just a good team – a couple unforced errors, and it's hard to keep up with a team like that," Falcons head coach
Abbie Wright said. "They played really well, and it wasn't our best night. Sometimes, it's just figuring how to pick them apart, and they were a tough team to pick apart tonight."
Hailey Gaines
Redshirt senior opposite Gaines hit .214 for the night and recorded double-digit kills for the 10
th time this season.
Senior setter
Symone Tran logged a double-double of 30 assists and 18 digs. It was her 13
th of the season and 58
th of her career. Junior outside hitter Oddo came within one dig of her 11
th straight double-double, finishing with nine to go along with her 10 kills.
After the teams traded points through the early portion of Game 1, Central rang up three in a row to snap a 7-7 tie and go in front for good. Seattle Pacific got as close as 13-12 before the Wildcats put five straight on the board to take command.
Central Washington scored the first five points of Game 2. The Falcons came within three points twice, the last time at 14-11.
Except for a 1-1 tie, the Wildcats led for the entirety of Game 3.
"They're talented, and we were just having a tough time matching that intensity," Wright said. "You have to be firing on all cylinders. We have to play emotionally tougher and mentally better and give ourselves a shot to win it."
BY THE NUMBERS
-- Seattle Pacific hit just .062 for the match with 31 kills and 24 errors on 112 attacks. It was the first time since a 3-0 loss to UC San Diego on Sept. 1 that the Falcons were kept below .100.
-- Central Washington had 11 more kills and 13 fewer errors, hitting .277 (44-11-119).
Shaun Crespi
-- Senior middle blocker
Shaun Crespi had three total blocks. That pushed her past 100 for the season (102) and lifted her into Seattle Pacific's all-time top five for career blocks. She now has 412, tying with
Gaylene MacDonald, who logged that many from 1987-88. It also is the second time Crespi had reached triple digits in a season, having logged 151 as a sophomore in 2016.
-- Senior libero
Amanda Ganete had 13 digs, giving her 1,339 for her career. She is 13 away from the No. 3 spots on the all-time list.
--
Symone Tran's 30 assists give her 3,917. That puts her within 93 of setting a new program record.
-- Junior
Mallie Donohoe, who has been playing primarily as a serving and defensive specialist, but also is listed as an outside hitter, saw some added playing time at that spot on Thursday. She responded with an error-free performance of four kills on 13 attacks and a team-leading .308 hitting percentage. Donohoe still came up with 10 digs and delivered SPU's only service ace of the night.
