Game Recap: Volleyball |

Victory vs. NNU was Long Overdue

For the first time since 2012, Falcons gain the upper hand against Nighthawks

        Box score (PDF)

NAMPA, Idaho – In the overall series, it had been seven years. In Nampa, it had been eight years.

On any version of the calendar, that's a long time between wins against one opponent.

But that volleyball calendar flipped to a new page for Seattle Pacific on Saturday afternoon – and that page has a 'W' on it.

Gabby Oddo slammed 20 kills – her first 20 of the season, and SPU's third -- as the Falcons downed Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match, 3-1.

Scores in the Johnson Sports Center were 25-22, 26-24, 29-31, 25-11.

SPU (4-8, 1-3 GNAC) had lost 13 in a row to the Nighthawks (5-6, 1-3 GNAC). In fact, their last win against them was a five-gamer on Sept. 29, 2012 in Seattle – back when NNU was still known as the Crusaders.

The last Seattle Pacific victory in Idaho was a four-gamer on Sept. 17, 2011.

Abbie Wright
"Winning on the road is really hard, and winning at NNU is really hard," said Falcons coach Abbie Wright, who came out top against the Nighthawks for the first time in her three  years at the helm. "They're well coached and they run a good program. Beating them is a confidence boost going into next week."

Lindsey Lambert
Oddo, junior outside hitter / opposite Maddie Batiste, and freshman setter Lindsey Lambert all recorded doubles-doubles. Oddo had 14 digs to go along with her 20 kills. Batiste had 16 kills and 12 digs. And Lambert, with her 39 assists and career-high 10 digs, logged her first collegiate double-double.

After taking Game 1, the Falcons were down 23-22 in Game 2, but bounced back to win it. The back-and-forth third game finally went Northwest Nazarene's way, extending the match to a fourth game. Seattle Pacific built a 16-6 lead in that one, then saw the Nighthawks go on a 4-0 run to get within six.

SPU scored nine of the final 10 point to close out the match.

"We started pretty strong in the first and second games," Wright said. "I could tell they were following our scouting report and going after some of the things we picked up on – and going aggressively with it. It was confidence in our style of play, and that improved throughout the match."

BY THE NUMBERS
-- Junior middle blocker Gabi Stegemoller had her best match of the year, with season-highs of 13 kills and a .463 hitting percentage, with just one error on 26 attacks.
-- Senior libero Mallie Donohoe had a career-high 25 digs. Her previous best was 22 against Chaminade on Sept. 14.
-- Gabby Oddo also had a season-high hitting percentage at .293 (20-3-58). The 58 attacks tied her season high.
-- The three double-doubles for the Falcons came after they didn't have any in Thursday's three-game loss at Central Washington. Maddie Batiste now has nine for the year, and Oddo has seven.
-- SPU had a season-high 61 kills and 189 attacks. It hit .222 (61-19-189), the third-highest mark of the year. That included .200 or better in all four games.
-- The sweep was Seattle Pacific's second of the season. The previous one was against Cal state East Bay in the season opener on Sept. 6.
