SPU Puts Two on All-Region Team

Alex Mejia and Nik Reierson net regional men's soccer honor

POMONA, Calif. – Seattle Pacific seniors Alex Mejia and Nik Reierson were recognized as first-team All-West Region selections when the 2021 Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association men's soccer awards were announced.

SPU was one of only three schools to place more than one player on the 13-man first team. There were no Falcons named to the second team.

A high-scoring forward, Mejia was recently named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He led the league in scoring with 14 goals and three of them were game-winning strikes. Adding in his two assists, Mejia compiled a 30-point total that topped the GNAC.

Mejia produced the highest single-season goal total by an SPU player since 2011 when Tyler Schultz scored 16 times. He found the back of the net in 11 of 18 outings this season, including a hat trick versus Saint Martin's on Oct. 9.

A product of Seattle's Roosevelt High School, Mejia completed his career with 24 goals and nine assists.

Reierson anchored a defense that held opponents to just over one goal per game (1.06) and posted six shutouts. The Falcons outscored their foes by a combined 37-19 margin.

He pushed forward from his outside back position to play a part in six of the team's goals, scoring two of them himself and assisting on four others. Among Reierson's goals was the game-winning tally in a 2-1 win over Northwest Nazarene on Oct. 7. He set up Mejia for the decisive goal in the Sept. 2, season-opening 2-1 win at Sonoma State.

Reierson's final Falcons career statistics feature four goals and six assists. He graduated from Cedarcrest High School in Duvall, Wash.

Seattle Pacific concluded the 2021 campaign on Nov. 18 with a 1-0 loss to Colorado State Pueblo in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. That marked the program's first playoff berth in five seasons.

The Falcons registered a 12-4-2 record, their most wins since 2015. They captured the GNAC championship with a 6-2-2 conference record.

The D2 CCA West Region Player of the Year honor was issued to Cal State LA defender Morten Bjoershol. That award and the all-region teams are nominated and selected by the region's sports information directors.

The D2 CCA encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of high education. The D2 CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact NCAA Division II athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.

The members of the All-West Region first team will now be placed on the national ballot for All-America consideration. All-America teams will be released Dec.7.
