NCAA Rowing Selection Show Airs Today

SPU women discover championship regatta destiny at 2:00 p.m. PDT

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Falcons fans can find out the fate of the Seattle Pacific crews on Monday afternoon when the NCAA Division II Women's Rowing Selection Show airs live on NCAA.com. The selection show broadcast is slated for 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time on May 17.

The Falcons seek to be the fortunate fleet that receives the one available at-large invitation to the NCAA regatta.

SPU solidified its position as the No. 2 seed in the West Region with a second-place showing at Saturday's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. But the Falcons are in a tenuous spot in terms of selection for the reduced national championship field.

The number of Division II qualifiers has been trimmed to four teams from its usual field of six. The reduction was made only for the 2021 national regatta due to concerns with the pandemic, which caused the cancellation of the 2020 championships.

The top seed from each of the three regions receives an automatic berth to the 2021 NCAA Championships, set for May 28-30 in Sarasota, Florida. That trio will be joined by one at-large entry. All four nationals qualifiers will compete their varsity eight and varsity four crews.

Central Oklahoma most certainly locked up the top spot in the West Region with Saturday's first-place GNAC performance and will receive the automatic qualifying berth accompanying that status. That leaves SPU to vie for the lone at-large invitation.

"We don't really have a sense of how they are going to select that fourth spot," first-year SPU coach Caitlin McClain said. "I'm shooting in the dark here on how they are going to look at it, but we're hopeful that we're going to get another shot."

The West Region produced three of the top-four finishers at the last NCAA Championships. Central Oklahoma won its second straight national title, Western Washington placed third and SPU fourth in 2019.
