SPU's Cavell is National Hoops Scholar

Falcons graduate student excels in the classroom and on the basketball court

AUSTIN, Texas – Seattle Pacific guard Harry Cavell was recognized as one of the nation's elite student-athlete scholars when the 2021 Academic All-America NCAA Division II men's basketball team was announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The SPU graduate student compiled an outstanding 3.84 grade point average during his first year of graduate school. Cavell is pursuing a master's in data analytics after receiving his bachelor's degree in business administration last spring. He is a three-time member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-academic team.

Cavell was one 15 men honored nationally and was a third-team selection. He is the Falcons' first men's basketball honoree since 2014 when David Downs capped a run of three consecutive appearances on the academic All-America team.

A 6-foot-6 shooting guard, Cavell received the 2020 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year award and was a second-team all-league selection after averaging 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

While the conference did not issue postseason awards in 2021, Cavell certainly would have been included as his averages improved to 16.7 points and a team-leading 7.2 rebounds. He was voted the GNAC Player of the Week on February 1.

Harry Cavell vs Western Washington, Jan. 23, 2020Early in the 2021 season, Cavell became the 11th player in Seattle Pacific history to collect both 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds. He currently ranks 22nd among the program's all-time scoring leaders with 1,151 points and is No. 16 in rebounds with 523.

Cavell erupted for a career-high 30 points in a home victory over Lewis-Clark State on January 27 and topped the team with three double-doubles in 2021.

He shot 88 percent from the line (64 of 73), helping the SPU men lead the nation in team free throw accuracy for the second straight season. The Falcons collectively shot 80.5 percent from the line last year and improved upon that fantastic figure with a school-record 84.2-percent performance in 2021.

The Falcons won their final five games of the abbreviated 2021 season, completing the campaign with a 10-3 record.

Cavell is a product of McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon.

The CoSIDA men's basketball first team features Academic All-American of the Year Dalton Bolon (West Liberty) along with Parker Fox (Northern State), Trenton Gibson (Tusculum), Chandler Jacobs (Dallas Baptist) and John Paul Kromka (Pittsburgh-Johnstown).

The second-team includes Elijah Jenkins (Embry-Riddle) Sam Orf (Alabama Huntsville), Tyler Riemersma (Augustana), Brendan Sullivan (Colorado Mines) and Jared Vitztum (Fort Hays State).

Joining SPU's Cavell on the third team are Adam Dworsky (Southeastern Oklahoma State), Conley Garrison (Drury), Ronnie Silva (Adelphi) and Owen White (Michigan Tech).

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
