Cavell Repeats as District Scholar

SPU grad student described by coach as "the gold standard" of student-athletes

SEATTLE – Harry Cavell's on-court contributions will be celebrated before Saturday's Senior Day men's basketball game. His impressive classroom achievements at Seattle Pacific University continue to be repeatedly recognized.

For the second straight season, Cavell was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 men's basketball team for NCAA Division II student-athletes.

The Seattle Pacific graduate student was among a list of five players acknowledged for their combination of academic and athletic excellence from the region that covers the entire West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii. Every district honoree will be placed on the Academic All-America ballot with first-, second- and third-team selections scheduled for announcement in March.

Cavell makes his second appearance on the district academic team, boasting a 3.78 grade point average in a graduate school curriculum. He is pursuing a master's in data analytics after receiving his bachelor's degree in business administration in 2020. On Wednesday, Cavell was honored as a rare four-time member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-academic team.

"Harry is the gold standard of what it means to be a student-athlete and we are so blessed to have him in our program," exclaimed SPU coach Grant Leep. "The level of commitment that he has displayed in the six years here, both academically and on the court, is remarkable."

On the court, the 6-foot-6 guard has earned a place among the greatest players to ever wear a Seattle Pacific uniform. Cavell is one of only four Falcons to rank among the school's top-10 in both career points and rebounds.

He ranks No. 7 among all-time SPU scorers with 1,449 points and is the 10th-leading rebounder with 657. Awards earned during his career include the 2020 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year and second-team selection to the all-conference team that same season. He was named to the All-GNAC preseason team this season.

Cavell is currently the Falcons top rebounder, collecting caroms as a 5.8 per-game clip. He is the team's third-leading scorer with a 13.0-point average. Cavell tallied 17 points and nine rebounds in Thursday's 87-79 home victory over Simon Fraser.

For his career, Cavell compiled seven double-doubles and 83 double-digit scoring games, including nine 20-point performance. He has been the Falcons' top rebounder in a game on 36 occasions and led them in scoring 17 times.

Cavell is a product of McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon.

The academic awards program is produced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 grade-point average, have already completed one season of competition and be a starter or significant reserve to be nominated.

Joining Cavell on the District 8 academic squad were repeat selections George Reidy from Northwest Nazarene and Blake Seits from Cal State San Marcos along with first-time selections Sean Orr from San Francisco State and Chico State's Kevin Warren.

The SPU men (14-9, 7-5 GNAC) play their final regular-season home game on Saturday versus Western Washington. Tip-off is 4:15 p.m. on Iron Coaching Court at Brougham Pavilion. Before the game, Cavell and five other Falcons' seniors will be honored during a brief Senior Day ceremony.
