SPU Athletics Weekly Preview: Dec. 1, 2025

SEATTLE – This week in Seattle Pacific University Athletics, men's basketball plays one Great Northwest Athletic Conference game on the road on Saturday, while the SPU women's basketball team hosts GNAC games on Wednesday on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

FROM THE COACH
"I am thrilled to be back playing on our home court this week for our opening GNAC games," head coach Karen Byers said. "Both Simon Fraser and Western Washington are talented teams, and these games are sure to be fun to watch. I am looking forward to seeing how we have improved from last week's Florida games and watching for fewer turnovers and more rebounds."

ABOUT THE FALCONS
  • The Falcons traveled 3,317 miles for the NSU Thanksgiving Classic, splitting games against Nova Southeastern and Palm Beach Atlantic during Thanksgiving weekend.
  • After a long day of travel, the Falcons fell to the 12th-ranked Sharks 88-69.
    • Layne Kearns led the Falcons with 16 points on five made field goals against the Sharks.
    • Haylie-Anne Ohta had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds against NSU.
    • Grace Turley went 7-for-10 from the free throw line while scoring 12 points last Friday.
  • The Falcons picked up a 53-42 victory over the Sailfish last Saturday.
    • Turley scored a game-high 15 points with six rebounds and three assists for the Falcons.
      • Turley has scored in double-figures in five of the six games the Falcons have played this season and is averaging 13 points per game this year.
    • Grace Leasure scored 10 points and had three rebounds for SPU.
    • Madison Rubino tied for a game-high nine rebounds while scoring seven points last Saturday morning.
      • Rubino had her best rebounding game of the young season with nine on Saturday.
    • Grace Mertes also had a season-high in rebounds last Saturday with six.

"First opportunity for GNAC competition," head coach Keffrey Fazio said. "We are excited to begin conference play. We're starting off against one of the best teams in the region, so we have our work cut out for us."

ABOUT THE FALCONS
  • The Falcons hosted the SPU Thanksgiving Classic last weekend, picking up two wins on their home floor.
  • Last Friday, the Falcons put together a complete performance to beat Vanguard 72-53.
    • Henry Sandberg scored a game-high 15 points while going 6-for-9 from the field and adding five rebounds and four assists to his stat line.
      • Sandberg was a point shy of tying his career high of 16 set on Dec. 21, 2024, against Douglas College.
        • Sandberg matched his career-high for assists, tying his performance from Feb. 22, 2025, against Alaska Anchorage.
    • Trace Evans scored 14 points and was perfect (5-for-5) from the field and the free throw line (4-for-4) in 19 minutes played.
    • Julian Mora scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Falcons.
  • Then on Saturday, the Falcons took down fourth-ranked Point Loma 80-73 to close out the SPU Thanksgiving Classic.
    • The Falcons have now won three of the last five games against Point Loma, dating back to a 96-89 victory on the road in San Diego on Nov. 30, 2019.
    • Saturday's victory over fourth-ranked Point Loma was the highest-ranked opponent the Falcons have beaten since Fazio took over in May of 2023.
      • It's the third victory over a ranked opponent during that span.
    • It's the highest-ranked opponent the Falcons have beaten since taking down Alabama-Huntsville 77-71 on Nov. 6, 2021.
    • Mora led everyone with 26 points, 24 of them coming in the second half.
      • Mora went 7-for-9 from the field, including a 4-for-5 effort from 3-point range.
      • He made all eight of his free throw attempts and added three assists with just one turnover to his stellar night for the Falcons.
      • Mora set career-highs in points (26) and free throws attempted (8) and made (8).
    • Brant Heppner set a new career best with nine points and 3-pointers made (3).
    • Aengus Sutherland has a new career-high in steals with four against the Sea Lions.
