Falcons Downed by Buzzer Beater from Nighthawks

SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's basketball team hosted Northwest Nazarene on Saturday afternoon in a game that featured six ties and three lead changes, with the final one coming off a last-second shot from NNU's RJ Chatman, which lifted NNU over SPU, 72-71.

"A lot of good today from our team but ultimately still more work to do," head coach Keffrey Fazio said. "Tough loss and the end but this game was lost because we were not the tougher team today and we well have to learn from that. Credit to Northwest Nazarene for playing hard."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons used a 22-7 run over the first nine and a half minutes of the game against the Nighthawks.
    • SPU went 9-for-13 from the field during that span, including a 4-for-6 performance from 3-point range.
    • Grant Coleman and Theo McMillan led the group with six points each during that span.
  • SPU led by 10 points with 4:26 left in the first half before going on a quick 12-2 run.
    • McMillan scored back-to-back buckets to start the run, while Julian Mora closed out the run with a 3-pointer and a layup consecutively.
  • The Falcons owned a 41-30 lead at halftime.
  • SPU led 55-46 with 11:08 left to play when NNU went on a 19-7 run to take a 65-62 lead with 3:26 left in the game.
    • Turnovers were costly for the Falcons, as they gave it up five times during that stretch.
  • Three points from McMillan, and three more from Mora tied the game 68-68 with 43 seconds left.
  • NNU made a layup to take a two-point lead with 14 seconds left.
  • After a timeout, McMillan drove the ball down the court before finding Mora in the corner for a 3-pointer that put the Falcons up 71-70 with seven seconds left.
  • As time expired, NNU's RJ Chatman banked in a floater to give the Nighthawks a 72-71 victory over the Falcons.

  • The Falcons shot 57.8 percent (26-for-45) from the field and went 11-for-21 from 3-point range.
  • McMillan led the Falcons with 18 points on an efficient 8-for-12 shooting from the field.
    • He had a game-high eight assists for SPU on Saturday.
  • Mora finished with 16 points while going 4-for-5 from 3-point range.
  • Connor Drinkwine scored 11 points for the Falcons while going 4-for-5 from the field.
  • Trace Evans was a point and a rebound away from a double-double, finishing with nine points and tied for a game-high nine rebounds.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • McMillan scored an SPU career-high 18 points for the Falcons on Saturday.
    • He made a career-high eight field goals for SPU on Saturday as well.
UP NEXT
The Falcons travel to the Last Frontier for two games next week. They take on Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 8:30 p.m. PST, followed by a game against Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 4:15 p.m.
