PORTLAND, Ore. – Check any track and field results sheet, and their names are going to show up somewhere. The hurdles, The steeplechase, The long jump. The 3000, 5000 or even the 10,000 meters.
For a group of five Seattle Pacific Falcons, their names also are going to show up on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team … year after year after year.
That was the case again on Friday when hurdler
Hannah Chang, steeplers / distance runners
Katelyn Flolo and
Maya Ewing, jumper
Maliyah Hicks and distance runner
Matise Mulch all were named to the squad for the third year in a row.

They were part of a group of 14 Falcons who made the GNAC grade. While that particular quintet of seniors pulled off the classroom three-peat, junior distance runner
Anna Prussian was on the list for the second year in a row.
The other eight Seattle Pacific competitors to earn a spot did so for the first time: sophomore distance runners
Alexa Gossett,
Nicole Pierce and
Lucia Templeton, junior 800-meter runner Anika Segall, sophomore sprinters
Sarah Bailey,
Sophie Hanay and
Evey Rowland, and sophomore javelin thrower Tia Cates.
From the three-time honorees, Flolo is an applied human biology major, Mulch is in mechanical engineering, Hicks is majoring in interior design, Chang is in physiology, and Ewing is a nursing major.
Among the 14 honorees, three have grade-point averages in the 3.9 range: 3.99 for Gossett, 3.98 for Templeton, and 3.96 for Flolo.
Ewing, Flolo, Gossett, Mulch, Pierce, Prussian, and Templeton made the cross country All-Academic team last fall. Hanay was named to the All-Academic soccer team.
To make the team, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 GPA, be a sophomore or older, be in at least their second year at school, and be competing during the current season.
SPU wraps up the regular season this weekend in Bellingham at Civic Stadium. A small group of Falcons will compete at the Pee Wee Halsell Invitational on Friday, with the first race set for 12:30 p.m. A larger squad will be at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational on Saturday. The first race is at 10:10 a.m.
