Falcons Challenge 25th-Ranked Coyotes before Falling in Four

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Seattle Pacific University women's volleyball team faced 25th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino to close out day two of the Yotes Classic Showcase on Friday. The Falcons tested the Coyotes throughout the match before falling 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24) to the hosts.  

FROM THE COACH  

"Tonight we saw some really good stretches from our team, including a great bounce back in set two after coming out a little flat in set one," head coach Jason Rhine said. "We also showed grit competing hard to the very end of set 4 and playing really high-level volleyball to finish the match. It's been a great tournament so far, and we are excited to have one more chance to compete again tomorrow before we head back to Seattle."  

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • The Falcons trailed 16-12 midway through the first half before the Coyotes went on a 7-2 run.  
  • CSUSB used that separation to take the first set 25-18.  
    • Five Falcons recorded kills in the first half, led by three from Amaya Evans.  
  • SPU responded well in the second set, racing out to an 11-4 lead.  
  • CSUSB used a 10-4 run to pull within a point of the Falcons midway through the second set.  
  • The Falcons used a 4-1 run to close out the second set by a score of 25-21  
    • Megan Omlid helped slam the door for the Falcons, bookending the run with kills for SPU.  
  • The Falcons were within three points of the Coyotes in the third set, but a 9-4 run from the hosts gave them a 25-18 set victory.  
    • Omlid continued to play well, racking up five kills during the third set.  
  • The fourth set featured 17 ties between SPU and CSUSB.  
  • The set was tied at 14-14 when the Coyotes went on a 6-2 run, giving them a 20-16 lead.  
  • The Falcons answered with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 20.  
  • Another 4-1 run gave the Falcons a chance to win the set, but the Coyotes scored the final three points to take the fourth set 26-24 and the match 3-1.  

FROM THE BOX SCORE  

  • The Falcons finished the match with 43 kills and a .216 hitting percentage.  
  • The Coyotes racked up 63 kills while hitting .308 against the Falcons.  
  • SPU gained an advantage from behind the service line with eight aces to four from CSUSB.  
  • Omlid led the Falcons with 12 kills with a .209 hitting percentage.  
  • Amaya Evans had 11 kills on an efficient .381 hitting percentage.  
  • Peyton Ensign made things happen offensively for the Falcons with 21 assists, while Sophia Chambers added 13 assists.  
  • Christina Lopez led the Falcons with 19 digs.  
  • Audra Rose was tough at the net, finishing the match with six total blocks for SPU.

The Falcons wrapped up their time at the Yotes Classic Showcase on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. when they play Westmont.
