STANFORD, Calif. – Four races. Three new NCAA qualifying times. Two more national top-10 performances.

One terrific day at the track for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.

Lynelle Decker put her name high on the 800-meter list, and the SPU women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays moved onto their respective qualifying lists for the first time this spring to cap a successful trip to California on the final day of the Stanford Invitational.

Lynelle Decker
Falcons sophomore Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS) posted a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2 minutes, 10.58 seconds for her two laps around the Cobb Track oval under sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 60s. That was almost a full second better than her previous best time of 2:11.57, set at last year's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in Monmouth, Ore.

As of mid-evening on Saturday, with other weekend results still pending from around the country, Decker's time was the fourth-best in Division II. It also gives her an excellent chance of staying off the bubble when the time arrives in May to determine who gets tickets to Allendale, Mich., for the national championships. Her mark on Saturday would have ranked 12th on last spring's national entry list. A minimum of 20 are taken for each individual event.

Tasia Baldwin in action in the 4x100 relay at Stanford Invitational.
Tasia Baldwin ran on both relays.
The 4x400 relay team of Kishia Mitchell, Tasia Baldwin, Jasmine Johnson, and McKayla Fricker put itself squarely into the national picture with a provisional clocking of 3:45.63. It was just two weeks ago when a slightly different SPU team (Johnson was out with a minor injury) ran 3:54.16 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene.

Saturday's time was ranked No. 6 nationally as of mid evening. It would have been No. 12 among last year's 15 accepted entries for nationals. At least 14 relays make it into the meet.

"They were fired up and ready to get after it," SPU assistant coach Audra Smith said. "We knew the conditions were going to be perfect. It really wasn't an option not to run well."

Added Fricker, "Going into it, we were all a little tired. But we knew this was an amazing opportunity that we had to seize. We all trusted each other and got to the line and got the baton, and went for it. The heat we were in was good competition (Fresno State, Stanford, Utah State, and Cal State Northridge), so we were excited."

Seattle Pacific's other 2014 first-time national qualifier was the 4x100 squad of BryAnne Wochnick, Mitchell, Kyra Brannan, and Baldwin. After twice coming close to the 47.11 provisional standard (most recently 47.33 on March 22 in Eugene), they slipped under it with a 47.09, ranking 14th as of Saturday evening. They'll have the rest of the rest of April and two meets in May – including the conference championships – to shave off a few more tenths. Last year's final accepted time for nationals was 46.60.

The Falcons' fourth raceon Saturday was Fricker in the 800, and for the second meet in a row, she broke the 2:09 barrier, finishing 19th overall in 2:08.80. At the Oregon Preview, the senior from Canby, Ore., went below 2:09 for the first time, coming across in 2:08.00. That still ranks as the second-best mark in D2, trailing only the 2:06.35 by Chante Roberts of Adams State.

ALSO IN CALIFORNIA …
On Friday, Mitchell ran a season-best 56.77 seconds to finish 19th in the 400 meters at Stanford. Decker barely missed an NCAA provisional time in the 1,500, stopping the watch in 4:35.81. The mark to beat is 4:35.34.

Turner Wiley
Junior Turner Wiley and sophomore Anna Patti both came up with big PRs at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday. Wiley (Issaquah, Wash. / Issaquah HS) finished the men's 10,000 meters in 31:39.47. That was nearly two minutes better than his previous best of 33:33.16 set last March 2.

Anna Patti mug 2012
Anna Patti
Patti (Renton, Wash. / Lindbergh HS) finished the women's 5,000 in 17:29.09, more than a full minute faster than the 18:38.64 from March 2013 that had been her best time.

Both Wiley and Patti became automatic qualifiers for the GNAC Championships, as did freshman Sarah Macdonald. In her first collegiate 5K, Macdonald (Tucson, Ariz.) ran 17:33.17.

JD SHOTWELL INVITATIONAL
For the second time in three weekends, freshman Maddi Hommes set three personal-best marks on one day.

Maddi Hommes header 2014
Maddi Hommes
First, Hommes (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden HS) threw the javelin 118 feet, 6 inches, bettering her 108-0 from last week's Club Northwest Spring Break Open. Then, she went 17.14 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, beating her 17.21 from the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open on March 22. Finally, Hommes long jumped 16-0 ¼. That was her first time in the 16s, and topped the 15-8 ¾  she posted at L&C.

Sammi Markham header 2014
Sammi Markham
Freshman Sammi Markham (Gig Harbor, Wash. / Gig Harbor HS) had a pair of PRs: 38-9 ¾ in the shot put (previous 38-1 ¼), and 124-2 in the javelin – exactly 14 feet farther than her 110-2 from last Saturday at the Club Northwest meet in West Seattle.

Junior David Ferguson (Inverness, Ill.) posted a season-best 22.32 in the men's 200-meter dash. He already was a GNAC provisional qualifier, and now is just one-tenth away from the 22.22 automatic time.
