Chang & Aboudou Claim Titles, Lead Falcons to Seven All-Conference Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. – Hannah Chang and Tawaf Aboudou earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, while Mikel Saxon, Maya Ewing, Anna Prussian, and Andrew Bell earned All-Conference honors during the GNAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

"It was exciting to watch our team the past two days," head coach Karl Lerum said. "We definitely had some outstanding individual performances, but more than that, it felt like our team was ready to compete across the range of events.  Hopefully, we can use this good momentum as we move into the outdoor season."
 
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Chang came through in the closest race of the weekend for the Falcons, winning the 60-meter hurdles by .01 with a time of 8.52.
    • Chang beat out Alaska Anchorage's Liv Heite for the conference championships.
  • Tawaf Aboudou earned his first GNAC crown in the long jump with a leap of 23-04.50.
    • Aboudou had a strong performance in the triple jump, clearing 47-07.75 on his way to a second-place finish.
    • He also earned a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.84 in the finals.
  • Andrew Bell had an outstanding run in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking an 8.18 and earning a silver medal in the event.
  • Maya Ewing took second place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:24.14.
    • Teammate Anna Prussian took third in the same event, finishing with a time of 17:28.76.
  • Prussian had a solid performance in Tuesday's 3,000-meter run, finishing in fifth place with a time of 10:13.16.
  • Mikel Saxon earned third place in the pole vault, clearing 14-09.00.
  • Justin Brooks earned a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 48.19.
  • Jada Sarrys took home seventh place in the 400 meters with a time of 57.76.
  • Isaac Venable finished 10th in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:19.21.
  • The men's 4x400 relay team of Robert Joshua, Brooks, Alex Venable, and Aboudou earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:20.38.
 
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • The Falcons collected seven All-Conference honors, including individual championships for Chang in the 60-meter hurdles and Aboudou in the long jump.
  • Chang's time was a new personal best and a new program record in the 60-meter hurdles.
    • Chang's 8.52 ranks 15th nationally in NCAA DII this season.
  • Aboudou was the only competitor to clear 23 feet in the men's long jump.
    • He became the third Falcon and first since 2007 to win the event at the indoor championships, joining Justin Felt (2007) and three-time gold medalist Chris Randolph (2004-06).
    • Aboudou earned a silver medal and All-Conference honors in the triple jump with a leap of 47-07.75.
    • Aboudou was the top-point earner among male competitors at the GNAC Indoor Championships.
  • Bell's time in the 60-meter hurdles earned an All-Conference nod.
  • Saxon picked up his first All-Conference honor with a third-place finish in pole vault.
  • Ewing and Prussian earned All-Conference recognition for their finishes in the 5,000 meters.
  • The men's 4x400 meter relay team set a new school record with a time of 3:20.48.
 
UP NEXT
Those who qualify will look forward to the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13-14 in Virginia Beach, VA. The Falcons turn their attention outdoors for the Ed Boitano Invitational hosted by Puget Sound University on March 6-7.
