SEATTLE – Seattle Pacific women's soccer standout
Sophia Chilczuk was a rare fourth-time selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 team for NCAA Division II student-athletes that was announced this week.
She appears among a list of 11 players honored for their excellence both in the classroom and on the field. Every district honoree will be placed on the Academic All-America ballot with first-, second- and third-team selections scheduled for announcement in December.
Chilczuk is one of only four student-athletes from the West who also appeared on last year's district academic team and is the only four-time honoree.
She is the only women's soccer player from the West to be selected to each of the last four district academic teams. Last season, Chilczuk parlayed all-district acclaim into a spot on the Academic All-America first team. She garnered third-team accolades in 2018.
The product of Kentridge High School in Kent, Washington is an applied human biology major with a 3.92 grade point average.
The Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-academic team was released earlier this week and Chilczuk was recognized for the unprecedented four time. She was a first-team All-GNAC selection in each of the last three seasons and was an honorable mention pick in 2017.
She is as impressive on the field as in the classroom. Chilczuk currently leads the GNAC and ranks No. 2 among Division II playmakers with 15 assists, just one behind the national leader. She is within one of the school's single-season record of 16 assists established in 2007 by Meredith Teague.
The senior forward netted six goals for a league-leading total of 27 points.
Chilczuk ranks among the all-time SPU soccer greats. She is second in career assists (32), fourth in total points (104) and fifth in goals (36).
The SPU women are currently listed No. 4 in the national rankings with a 16-1-1 record. The regular-season champion Falcons compete for the GNAC Tournament title on Saturday against No. 13 Western Washington. Kick-off is 1:00 p.m. at Harrington Field in Bellingham.
The academic awards program is produced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 grade-point average, have already completed one season of competition and be a starter or significant reserve to be nominated.
District 8 is comprised of the entire West, including Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, California and Arizona.
