Chilczuk is Academic All-American

SPU senior forward named to national scholar squad for third time

AUSTIN, Texas – One day after being honored as a first-team All-American for her production on the field, Seattle Pacific's Sophia Chilczuk was recognized Thursday for her prowess in the classroom. She was named to the Academic Al-American team for the third time when the annual CoSIDA list of national scholar-athletes was released.

A product of Kentridge High School in Kent, Washington, Chilczuk is an applied human biology major with a 3.92 grade point average at SPU.

She is among 11 first-team selections on a list of 34 student-athletes singled out among student-athletes from more than 260 NCAA Division II schools that compete in women's soccer.

Chilczuk is one of only two three-time honorees among 2021 recipients and five others were repeat picks from last season. She earned first-team acclaim in 2020 and was a third-team pick in 2018.

Last year, Chilczuk became just the second player in SPU history to make multiple appearances on the Academic All-America team, joining Shayla Page who received consecutive accolades in 2014 and 2015. Now, she stands alone as the only three-time Academic All-American in SPU women's soccer history.

A senior forward, Chilczuk leads the nation with 17 assists, a single-season school record. She netted six goals to forge a 29-point total that ranked second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Chilczuk played a part in nine game-winning goals, scoring two of them and setting up teammates seven times. She was named to the all-conference team for the third time and received the 2021 GNAC Tournament Most Valuable Player award.

SOPHIA CHILCZUK GOAL (Oct. 21)

Chilczuk was honored as a first-team All-American on Tuesday by the United Soccer Coaches organization, the Falcons' first since Meredith Teague in 2008.

She completed her collegiate career as one of the finest Falcons ever. Chilczuk has 34 career assists, tying with Teague for the SPU career record. Chilczuk's 36 career goals rank No. 5 in the school record book and she is third with 106 total points.

Chilczuk helped the Falcons compile a 19-2-1 record that featured a 15-game unbeaten streak. They captured the GNAC regular-season championship with a 12-1-1 league ledger and then won the conference tournament title.

The Falcons won the West Region championship with a 2-1 victory over Western Washington on Dec. 2 in Dallas, Texas. Their season ended on Saturday with a 1-0 loss at Dallas Baptist in the NCAA quarterfinals.

The academic awards program is produced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 grade-point average, have already completed one season of competition and be a starter or significant reserve to be nominated.
