ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla – The Seattle Pacific University women's golf team played in the final tournament of its inaugural fall season on Monday and Tuesday when Brigitte Fenton led the Falcons to an 11thplace finish at the Flagler Fall Slam.
The Falcons faced challenges in both competition and conditions at the Flagler Fall Slam. The 6,062-yard, par-72 Marsh Creek Country Club course proved to be difficult. The Falcons overcame those challenges, with an 11-stroke improvement from round one to round two.
"The course was playing extremely difficult," head coach Tyler Copp said. "All tournament, players were forced to carry hazards off the tee and into greens. In addition, wind and weather conditions made it our toughest challenge so far. Flagler College and Marsh Creek Country Club hosted a great event."
Round two featured a standout performance from Fenton. She shot a team-best 78, a five-stroke improvement from round one. Fenton finished the tournament tied for 44th place.
"Other than a couple of big numbers in round one, Brigitte played high-level golf," Copp said. "She put together some impressive bogey saves and had a few par streaks to go along with her three birdies. She's making strides with her mental game that will pay off come spring season. Her 78 in round 2 felt like a 74 in a Pacific Northwest event."
Round two saw improvements from other Falcons as well. Sara Rhodes turned in an 85, while Sophie Stamatis had an 86. Zoe Garcia showcased consistency throughout the tournament with scores of 82 and 83 consecutively.
"I was proud of how we rallied on day two," Copp added. "As we learned more about how to play the course and conditions, our players adjusted well to yardages and club selection. We have a lot of positive takeaways from this Fall season and will continue to grow."
The Falcons will spend the winter refining their skills before returning to action in the spring. They tee it up on Feb. 3-4 at the LA Spring Invite in Los Angeles at the Rio Hondo Golf Club.
