Falcons Announce 2025 Cross Country Schedule

SEATTLE – Seattle Pacific University men's and women's cross country assistant coach Eric Hansen announced the 2025 schedule for the Falcons on Wednesday afternoon, featuring races close to home and a trip to Oregon before the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in Billings, Mont., on Oct. 25.

The Falcons run their first race on Sept. 13. Green River College hosts the Green River Invitational at Fort Steilacoom Park. It's the second season in a row that the Falcons will open the year at this event.

"We'll be opening our season at Fort Steilacoom Park for the Gator Cross meet," Hansen said. "This was a fun meet last year and a good way to kick off our season against some other local teams."

SPU makes the trip to Monmouth, Ore., for the Mike Johnson Classic on Sept. 27. The race is run at the Ash Creek Preserve and is hosted by GNAC member Western Oregon.

"Western Oregon is hosting our regional championships this year, so we are using this as a good opportunity to see the course and race on it so we can be as prepared as possible for regionals in November," Hansen said.

The Falcons close out their regular season in Seattle, where they'll compete at the Emerald City Open at Lower Woodland Park. Races are scheduled for Oct. 11.

"The Emerald City Open features probably the most challenging course we will race on this year," Hansen explained. "Fortunately, we practice at Lower Woodland Park quite often, so this will feel more like a home meet even though we are not the ones hosting it."

SPU heads east for the GNAC Championships this year. Montana State University Billings will host the 2025 GNAC Championships. The Falcons take on the Amend Park course to find out where they rank amongst the GNAC's best.

"This is the part of the season that we spend all fall preparing for," Hansen said. "There are some good teams in our conference that we know are always going to be tough to beat. We have had some good head-to-head races against a few of those teams pretty consistently over the last year, so we know if we want to improve on last year's finish, we are going to have to earn it. But a lot of the top runners from last year's conference championship have graduated, so there may be a few all-conference spots up for grabs."

Those who qualify for the NCAA West Regionals will run a familiar course from an earlier part of the season. The event on Nov. 8 takes place in Monmouth, Ore., on the Ash Creek Preserve course. The NCAA National Championships happen on Nov. 22 in Kenosha, Wisc. The best of the best race on the Wayne E Danehl National Cross Country Course to decide the 2025 National Champions.

"Our goal is always to finish higher than we did the year before, and I think we have a good chance of doing that on both sides," Hansen added. "Our women's distance squad finished outdoor season very strongly this past spring, and we are excited about the men's class that we are bringing in this year. You never really know how many teams will advance from your region in any given year until it's all said and done. But if you can finish top 5, you usually have a good chance of making it through."

Returning for the SPU women are experienced athletes in Maya Ewing, Katelyn Flolo, and Matise Mulch. Ewing had a strong 2024 campaign, accruing All-GNAC honors, USTFCCCA All-West Region honors, and USTFCCCA All-Academic honors a season ago. Flolo returns as a two-time GNAC All-Academic award winner. Mulch does well in the classroom as well, with two GNAC All-Academic team appearances and two USTFCCCA national All-Academic team selections.

Isaac Venable and Nathaniel Gale return to the men's team, which has the most experienced members. Both Venable and Gale are two-time GNAC All-Academic team selections. The men's team features plenty of newcomers, as Avery Erickson, Mason Borland, Darian Penn, Sam Wieland, and Alex Venable will compete for the Falcons for the first time in 2025.
