Maya Ewing is Top D2 Finisher in Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Seattle Pacific's Maya Ewing was the top women's finisher among NCAA Division II competitors Saturday, placing fifth overall, and Isaac Venable was 39th in the men's race at the Mike Johnson Classic cross country meet at the Ash Creek Preserve.

Ewing clocked an impressive time of 20-minutes, 55.60-seconds over the 6,000-meter course. That result continued a strong start to the season for the senior standout, who notched her first ever college cross country victory on Sept. 13 at the Green River Invitational.

Cadence Kasprick, one of three unattached competitors who paced the field, won the women's race in 20:43.50. The top collegian was fourth-place Emma Stolte (20:49.87) from Division I Portland State.

SPU was in seventh-place position in the women's team standings with Chico State at the top of the table.

Venable, a senior, covered the 8,000-meter men's distance in 25:11.10. Chico State won the men's team title despite Northwest Nazarene boasting the top-three finishers. The Falcons men were seventh.

FROM THE COACH
"The women ran fast today but so did everyone else," exclaimed SPU distance coach Eric Hansen. "We got a good feeling for what the rest of the conference is looking like and what we need to work on.

"Maya (Ewing) mixed it up with some of the top women in the west region. Anna (Prussian) is looking like herself again after a rough first meet.

"The men competed well. Our freshmen did a great job in their first 8,000-meter race. Darian (Penn) made some big moves in the last kilometer to help us win the team tiebreaker against Cal State East Bay. I'm really excited to see how these guys continue to improve."
