Dave Wortman knew how to fill up the basket. And from 1958-62, the Seattle Pacific Falcons counted on him to do just that.

During his 92 games in Falcon colors, all under the tutelage of Falcon Legends coach Les Habegger, the star forward pumped in 1,328 points – a 14.4 average that still is in the program’s all-time top 10.

For three straight seasons, Wortman led the team in scoring. He averaged 13.9 points per game as a sophomore in 1959-60, followed by a career-best 17.6 as a junior in 1960-61, then capped his career by averaging 16.7 in 1961-62.

Wortman was Seattle Pacific’s top shooter as a sophomore at 45.2 percent. He set the pace at the free throw line as a senior, hitting 75.8 percent.

But Wortman did more than just score. As a senior, he was the leading Falcon rebounder with 217, an 8.0 average. He collected 655 boards for his career, a 7.1 average that ranks among the top 10 in school history.

Wortman’s performance as a senior helped Seattle Pacific finish at 20-7, and earned him honorable mention All-American status from United Press International.

“It was extremely satisfying to be part of the start of the ‘tradition of winning’ that Coach Habegger built in his 19 years at SPC,” Wortman said.
