Put a ball into Jeff McBroom’s hand, and chances were good – better than good, actually – that he would put it into the basket.
Chances also were better than good that the 6-foot-5 McBroom would help the Falcons take down whatever team was on the other side of the court on any given night.
With honors ranging from Seattle Pacific MVP to first-team All-America, McBroom is one of the most highly decorated men’s basketball players in school history.
But it wasn’t just about him. During his four seasons (1996-99), the Falcons put together an 82-35 record that included three trips to the NCAA Tournament. As a senior, when he averaged a school single-season record 24.3 points per game (a mark that still stands as the best ever), SPU went 23-8 and reached the Sweet 16.
The Falcons also got that far during McBroom’s junior season when McBroom averaged 18.3 points per game.
As for that All-America award at the end of his senior year in 1999? McBroom actually collected three of them: first-team honors from the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and from the Division II Bulletin, and third-team recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Those were in addition to a pair of All-District honors and the Pacific West Conference’s Player of the Year award.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS (1996-99)
• Topped the 500-point mark for two years in a row, tallying 558 as a junior and 754 as a senior.
• He remains the only Falcon to score more than 700 in a season.
• Hit 120 shots from 3-point range during his 1998-99 senior season, which still stands as the single-season school record. Was the first Falcon to hit more than 100 and remains one of just three SPU players to do so.
• Co-winner of SPU’s Ron Grady Athlete of the Year honor in 1999.
